My Honest Shigai Royalty Review: A Puzzle Mechanic Amazon Buyers Haven't Seen Yet

Murdoku-style mystery logic puzzles with suspects, clues and a body in the room. Shigai generates and checks the puzzles, then gives you the tools to turn them into KDP books or printables.

If you've spent any time looking through Amazon's puzzle-book listings, you've probably noticed the problem. There are endless word searches, sudoku books and variations of the same ideas. People still buy puzzle books, but publishing another version of something they've already seen hundreds of times makes it much harder to stand out. At that point you're relying heavily on the cover, the price and your keywords.

That's what caught my attention with Shigai Royalty from Ike Paz and Luke Bowes. It creates Murdoku-style mystery logic puzzles. You still get the deduction side of a logic puzzle, but there's a murder-mystery wrapped around it. I reviewed their Kuro Nazo whodunit software earlier this year, and some of my readers went on to publish books with it. So when I saw what they were doing with Shigai, I wanted to get inside it and see whether it was actually different or just another puzzle generator with a new name.

The Mechanic: How A Murdoku Puzzle Actually Works

Before getting into the software, the puzzle itself needs a quick explanation. Imagine a mansion laid out as a grid. There are suspects, rooms and a list of clues. Every clue is a true statement, so the player works through them and figures out where each person belongs. One room contains the victim. Once everybody has been placed correctly, the person left alone with the victim is the killer.

What I like about the puzzle format:

1

Sudoku logic

The basic deduction feels familiar if you've played sudoku or logic-grid puzzles.

2

Mystery story

The suspects and setting give the puzzle more personality than a plain grid.

3

One solution, verified

The engine checks that each puzzle has one logical solution, so the player shouldn't have to guess.

4

A real payoff

You finish by identifying the culprit, which gives the puzzle a proper ending rather than just a completed grid.

It's easy to understand, but it doesn't feel like another standard sudoku book.

I also wouldn't brush past the single-solution verification. If a logic puzzle has two possible answers, readers will find it. And if you've published a whole book full of generated puzzles, checking every one manually isn't realistic. Shigai checks the puzzle logic for you, which removes one of the bigger risks with this type of software.

What Exactly Is Shigai Royalty?

Shigai Royalty runs in the browser, so there's nothing to install. You choose the difficulty, grid size, cast and scenario, then the software generates the puzzle, clues, hints and the step-by-step solution. There's also a KDP page designer and bulk generation, so you can build a complete book instead of creating every page separately.

The $19 front end includes 5 difficulty levels, with Dragon 🐉 at the top, and grid sizes from 6×6 to 16×16. You can create custom casts, upload photos, change the rooms and choose between Murder Mystery and Heist scenarios. PNG exports are unlimited and PDF exports are capped at 100 per month on this level.

One feature I think is easy to overlook is the custom cast. You can upload photos and use real people as the suspects. That gives you another angle beyond ordinary puzzle books: personalised whodunits for birthdays, families, groups or gifts. I would definitely test that rather than only pumping out generic KDP titles.

Two Income Rails From One Tool

Another thing I wouldn't limit this to is Amazon. The same puzzles can be packaged for two different types of customer:

📕 Rail 1 — KDP Paperbacks

Create full paperback puzzle books for Amazon. KDP handles the printing and shipping, while the built-in page designer and bulk tools help you put the interiors together.

🖨️ Rail 2 — Printables

Export the puzzles as digital files and sell them through Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or your own site. That gives you a second use for work you've already generated, without printing or shipping anything yourself.

I like having both options because you're not tying the entire idea to one marketplace. A puzzle you create for a paperback can also become part of a printable pack.

How It Works — 3 Simple Steps

1

Set the case

Pick your difficulty (up to Dragon), grid size (6×6 to 16×16), scenario mode, and cast — or upload photos for a custom cast and custom rooms.

2

Generate the book

The engine builds verified single-solution puzzles with clue sets, hint ladders, and full step-by-step walkthroughs — in bulk, not one at a time.

3

Design & publish

Lay it out in the KDP page designer, export (unlimited PNG, 100 PDFs/month on the front end), and upload to Amazon — or sell the files as printables.

A Closer Look At What's Inside

🧩 The Verified Puzzle Engine

Generates the grid, cast placement and clue logic, then checks that the puzzle has one solution that can be reached logically. For me, this is one of the most important features because broken puzzles can ruin an otherwise good book.

🎚️ 5 Difficulties, 6×6 to 16×16 Grids

Difficulty runs from Easy through Dragon, with grids from 6×6 to 16×16. That gives you enough range to make simpler books for casual players and much harder editions for people who want a serious challenge.

👤 Custom Casts & Rooms (Photo Upload)

You can upload photos, use real people as suspects and customise the rooms. I see this as a useful option for personalised books and custom orders, not just standard Amazon titles.

💡 Hint Ladders + Solution Walkthroughs

The software can add progressive hints and full solution walkthroughs. That's useful because a reader who gets stuck can get some help without immediately jumping to the final answer.

📐 KDP Page Designer + Bulk Generation

This handles the interior-layout side and lets you generate puzzles in batches. If your plan is to build more than one book, bulk generation is obviously much more practical than creating every puzzle individually.

The Offer — What Each Tier Adds

There are four products in the funnel. You can use the $19 front end on its own, so you don't have to buy every upgrade. Here's what changes as you move through the funnel:

FRONT END

Shigai Royalty — $19

The complete whodunit engine: all 5 difficulties, grids 6×6–16×16, custom cast with photo upload and custom rooms, Murder Mystery + Heist modes, hint ladders, step-by-step walkthroughs, the full page designer with bulk generation, unlimited PNG and 100 PDF exports a month.

UPGRADE 1

Shigai Royalty PRO — $57

New puzzle variants (🎭 Lying Killer, 🚪 One Wasn't There), 🎲 choose-the-culprit for personalised gift books, all 9 kid & family modes plus the Kawaii art pack, premium page design (borders, tints, dossier headers), self-check ciphers, certificates, custom fonts, Floor Studio with furniture uploads, and unlimited PDF + PPTX export. The lifted PDF cap alone matters if you publish regularly.

UPGRADE 2

Shigai Royalty ELITE — $187

This is aimed more at people building a larger catalog: 5 premium variants (👑 Grand Mystery, 🤝 Accomplices), IF-THEN conditional and coded cipher clues, 11 seasonal modes, a custom scenario builder, all 14 artwork packs, 📚 Edition Variants that spin Large Print / Pocket / B&W SKUs from one book, 🌍 World Builder, a one-click ✨ Story Book wizard, KDP pre-flight checks, front matter, Spanish (beta) and SVG export. At $187, this is a big jump from the front end. I wouldn't buy it unless you already know you're going to use the extra publishing features.

UPGRADE 3

Genten Royalty — $47

A separate studio: Math Mystery — whodunits solved with maths, built for teachers and parents. Grades 1–6, roughly 50 math-skill generators, 163 themes (95 of them kid-safe worlds), 5 case generators including Escape Adventure, 9 full book languages, every case verified sound by simulation. It makes the most sense if teachers, parents or educational printables are part of the market you want to target.

I would start with the $19 version and actually make something with it. If you find yourself hitting the PDF limit or wanting the extra variants, then PRO becomes easier to justify. ELITE is harder to justify for a beginner at $187. Genten is really a separate decision based on whether you want to enter the education market.

My Real Take

I've published 37+ books on KDP, and the question I keep coming back to with these generators is simple: would I have a reason to click this book instead of the ten similar books around it? A lot of low-content software just helps you produce more of the same material that's already everywhere. Shigai has a better chance of standing out because the puzzle format itself is different. You're solving a logic puzzle, but you're also trying to identify a killer. That's more interesting to me than another batch of word searches.

I also have some history with the vendors. I covered Kuro Nazo earlier this year and I've seen readers of mine use it to publish. Their communities contain posts from members sharing royalty dashboards and their own results. Those screenshots are worth looking at, but I wouldn't treat them as a prediction of what you're going to earn. They're individual results. Buying software doesn't create royalties by itself; you still have to choose sensible topics, publish good books and keep at it.

The main weakness I see isn't really in the puzzle generator. It's what happens before you use it. Shigai can create the book, but it doesn't tell you whether the topic you're about to target has enough demand or whether the competition is too strong. You can still build the wrong book very efficiently. That's the reason I paired this offer with Diorasis, my own KDP research toolkit.

For me, the opportunity isn't simply to publish more puzzle books. It's to give puzzle buyers something that doesn't look exactly like the last ten books they scrolled past.

My Bottom Line

After going through Shigai Royalty, I think the $19 front end is good value for someone who already wants to publish puzzle books. The strongest part is the Murdoku format itself. It gives you something noticeably different from another word-search or sudoku interior, and the built-in verification is important if you're going to generate puzzles in volume. I also like that the output isn't locked to KDP; you can reuse the same work for printables. I wouldn't buy it expecting automatic royalties, and I wouldn't jump straight into the expensive upgrades. But as a puzzle-creation tool, there's enough here on the front end for me to recommend testing it.

My recommendation: if the Murdoku format fits what you want to publish, start with the $19 front end. Before building a full book, research the topic properly. That's exactly where I'd use Diorasis.

Your Questions, Answered

❓ What's a "Murdoku" puzzle in one sentence?

It's sudoku-style grid deduction wrapped in a murder mystery: a mansion grid, a cast of suspects, and clues that are all true statements. The solver places every suspect by pure logic, and whoever ends up alone with the victim is the culprit.

❓ Do I have to solve or design the puzzles myself?

No. The engine generates the grid, cast, clue logic, hint ladder and step-by-step solution. It also checks that the puzzle has one logically reachable answer, so you don't have to design or solve every puzzle manually.

❓ I'm a complete beginner. Is this too advanced?

The software itself isn't especially complicated. You're mainly choosing the difficulty, grid size, scenario and cast, then working with what it generates. The page designer handles the interior layout. If you're new to KDP, you'll still need to learn the Amazon upload and listing process.

❓ Where can I actually sell these books?

The obvious route is Amazon KDP paperbacks, where Amazon handles printing and shipping. You can also sell the puzzles as digital printables through Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or your own store. Diorasis is focused on the KDP research and publishing-decision side; you can still reuse Shigai output for printables separately.

❓ How do I know WHICH puzzle book to make?

Shigai doesn't make that decision for you. You still need to research demand and competition before choosing a topic. That's why Diorasis is my main bonus: you can enter the data from Amazon's first page, or use the Chrome extension to capture it, and then review the niche score before you start building the book.

❓ Isn't the puzzle book market saturated?

The puzzle-book market is definitely crowded. That's exactly why I wouldn't publish another generic word-search book and expect it to magically sell. The Murdoku angle gives you a different format to test, but you still need to check the specific niche you're entering. Diorasis can help with that research rather than relying on a blanket claim that every puzzle niche is profitable.

❓ Are there export limits?

On the front end, PNG exports are unlimited and PDF exports are capped at 100 per month. PRO removes the PDF limit and adds PPTX export. Whether you need that depends on how much you're actually producing.

❓ What about those member income screenshots?

They're posts from individual members in the vendors' private communities. I would treat them exactly as individual testimonials, not as typical earnings or a forecast of what you'll make. Your results can be very different and depend on what you publish, the niches you choose and how consistently you work.

❓ Which upgrade is worth it?

PRO ($57) is the upgrade I'd look at first if you're publishing regularly because it removes the PDF cap and adds more variants plus the kid/family modes. ELITE ($187) is much harder to justify unless you're building a larger catalog and know you'll use its extra tools. Genten ($47) is separate and really only makes sense if you want to create math mysteries for teachers and parents.

❓ How do I get your bonuses after buying?
